Light Lab Lumiére Closing Event
Light Lab Lumière is an exclusive series of immersive, hands-on workshops designed to deepen the understanding of the intricate and ever-evolving relationship between light, color, and design. Curated and led in collaboration with renowned lighting expert Caroline Crespin, each session invites participants to explore how light shapes human perception, influences our mood and emotions, and transforms our perception of spaces. Through guided experimentation and open dialogue, Light Lab Lumière fosters a deeper appreciation for the emotional and psychological impact of light, encouraging designers and artists to see it not merely as a technical element but as a powerful expressive medium. The workshops aimed to spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and push the boundaries of light further.
This summer, French lighting designers were invited to embark on a creative adventure with Light Lab Lumière. Over the span of just a couple of weeks, DiGidot has visited 7 different studios in France: Agence On, AURA, Concepto, I.C.O.N., Ponctuelle, Studio Dichro, Wonderfulight. The sessions took place across different cities: Paris, Toulouse and Bordeaux.
The sessions achieved a harmonious balance between theory and practice, weaving together conceptual insight and hands-on experimentation. Guided by Caroline, participants first delved into the scientific and emotional principles of light, discovering how pixels emit it in unique way unlike any other medium. Following that, designers were then invited to create pixel controlled sequences themselves, to translate their discoveries into a hands-on activity. This integrated approach bridged the gap between academic exploration and practical experimentation, opening new pathways for curiosity and creativity.
Each of the 7 studios received a special box. These boxes revealed one of the principal colours of the rainbow, which were randomly distributed between the participants. Alongside the assigned colour, studios received a DiGidot compact controller, a custom light box with an RGBW flag sheet inside, additional diffusers and backgrounds, and an educational Light Lab Lumière booklet. Using the provided tools mixed with a little imagination, the artists were invited to illuminate their light boxes the way they want.
To celebrate the conclusion of Light Lab Lumière and showcase the participants’ achievements, we brought everyone together in Paris for a final gathering. The event took place at Le Centquatre, a vibrant cultural center that provided the perfect setting to reflect on our creative journey. Each studio presented its finished light box, and soon the room came alive, glowing with an array of colorful, ambient luminaries that perfectly captured the workshop's spirit of collaboration.
The event kicked off with Niels van Duinen, CEO of DiGidot, who gave an inspiring opening speech. He talked about co-creation as a driver of innovation, and the importance of staying curious. "For DiGidot, projects like these are the enablers of progress. These experiments have enriched both our technical understanding and your creative freedom. We don’t separate art and technology. We believe they advance together, in constant dialogue that gives birth to new ideas and opportunities," says Niels.
Caroline Crespin continued the evening with an inspiring presentation that reflected her own insights gained through this shared experience. She talked about the unique transmission of colour achieved with pixel lighting: "At that moment, we were no longer perceiving an image on a screen, nor a lamp or light fixture emitting colored light - but somehow, we were experiencing a little of all of these at once." Being a well-established figure in the lighting design industry for many years now, she still found herself discovering new possibilities of working with her instrument.
Following that, our special guest of the evening, a researcher in the lighting field, Riccardo Caratti-Zarytkiewicz prepared a lecture on luminous and profound colours and light. Diving deeper into the specifications of each colour, its meaning and cultural significance, Riccardo showcased an expert overview that was both engaging and insightful.
The evening was closed with a discussion with the participants. The panel was mediated by Vincent Laganier, a lighting designer and founder of a French industry magazine Light Zoom Lumiere. The studios shared their thoughts and inspirations derived from the workshop, and discussed future implementations of their learnings. For many of them, it was the first time working with digital and dynamic lighting, and these sessions have broadened their professional horizons to open ways for new creative possibilities.
Here at DiGidot, we believe that the future of light is built through co-creation – experimenting, sharing ideas, discovering new techniques and thinking different. Our DiGidot C4 controller is there to transmit these visions through shape, movement and colour. Though collaborating with lighting designers and artists we learn how to refine, discover and push the boundaries of what's possible further.
